Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads woven in each square inch of fabric. Higher thread counts may mean softer material, although the composition (single-ply or multi-ply) and quality of the actual thread matter more than the number of threads used.
Does a higher thread count mean better? In most cases, no. In fact, anything more than 500 becomes too heavy and unbreathable. Again, the myth of a higher thread count being greater in quality. It is not uncommon for cotton yarns to be manipulated (i.e. twisted weaves) and so by doubling or tripling the yarns, the thread count may go up, but often at the expense of weakening the quality and in turn, the longevity of the product.
Takasa's thread counts are in the optimal range of 300 made of single-ply long-staple cotton to ensure the softest, most luxurious feel without being too heavy or hot.
Sateen vs Percale
The technical difference between Takasa's sateen and Cool + Crisp percale is the way they are woven, and the functional difference is in the feel and warmth of the material.
Sateen feel (Warm + Luxurious) vs Percale feel (Cool + Crisp) Percale has a weave of a traditional one-yarn-over and one-yarn-under grid, giving it a matte finish and a lightweight, breathable texture. High in durability, it gets more comfortable with every wash. The feel of percale is crisp and cool, making it ideal for warmer sleepers. Sateen sheets are woven using a one-yarn-under and three-yarn-over weave. This method exposes more thread surface and gives it a silky feel and sheen. The tighter weave on the sateen gives it the feeling of satin (without the expense and fragile nature of satin). It’s also more heavyweight than percale, making it ideal for year-round comfort and warmth.
