The Ethical Mattress Co. (EMC) was founded by Bryan Umiker in 2018 and opened its showroom in Millburn, New Jersey, in 2022. Drawing on over 20 years of experience in the bedding and retail industries, Bryan’s journey began in luxury retail at Bloomingdale’s, which later included leadership roles in business development at King Koil and as Vice President at Casper. Over time, he grew disillusioned with certain lower-grade product aspects and unethical sales tactics, realizing that many in the industry prioritize shareholder interests over the quality and ethical standards that consumers deserve. In response, Bryan started and created a business model focused on organic, natural, high-quality, American-made mattresses and products, paired with exceptional customer service—free from the typical sales tactics of the mattress industry.
The store’s ethos is to provide consumers with a selection of well-made, toxin-free, natural, and organic hybrid mattresses—and other sleep products—at everyday low prices, which can be tested in a stress-free shopping experience without unnecessary frills. Whether in the showroom or online, visitors can benefit from excellent personalized customer assistance provided by EMC’s seasoned industry professionals. All their products are healthier, practical alternatives to mainstream industry offerings.
Their business operates on a “service first” mantra: “We’re not here to make a sale, we’re here to help you solve your sleep problem.”
The principles EMC holds dear.
Bryan has a deep passion for understanding the mattress industry from every angle—sales, manufacturing, and customer interaction. His commitment to offering ethical, high-quality products truly sets him apart in the market. EMC’s own Ethical Mattress collection, carefully designed by Bryan and manufactured by BIA, has experienced steady growth in sales. As their reputation continues to grow, customers know they can expect:
Quality First – EMC’s hybrid mattresses combine the support and breathability of traditional springs with the comfort of natural latex for long-lasting durability and comfort.
Craftsmanship – Their mattresses are made by trusted American manufacturers, including Bedding Industries of America, with an emphasis on durability and performance.
Personalized Customer Service – EMC has a relaxed, no-pressure shopping environment, and their “elf” team is always ready to guide and to answer any questions. The 100-night comfort guarantee, free local delivery, and the mattress recycling program to make every purchase convenient and hassle-free.
Community Engagement – Based in Millburn, EMC serves surrounding towns like Maplewood, Montclair, and Short Hills, and supports local businesses and events. They are also thrilled to be part of our TMU community and answer any questions you may have on TMU Mattress Forum.
What sets EMC apart is its commitment to quality, comfort, and personalized service. Bryan and his team’s focus on helping customers find the right sleep solutions, paired with high-quality hybrid mattresses and lasting relationships, makes EMC a trusted choice for many.
