Back Science™, is a division of Relief-Mart, Inc., headquartered in Southern California and led by Dr. Rick Swartzburg, D.C. Since 2012, Dr Rick along with his father Jim, has been collaborating within our Trusted Community, leveraging his expertise as a consultant. Dr. Rick specializes in understanding the interplay between mattress materials and their impact on spinal alignment, comfort, and support levels.
Dr. Rick's journey with Relief-Mart began with his insightful contributions to mattress design, particularly focused on optimizing sleep and addressing back and lumbar pain. His approach integrates extensive customer feedback and data gathered from thousands of case studies. This wealth of information has been instrumental in refining the Back Science Sleep System, aimed at balancing personalized factors such as support, comfort, temperature regulation, motion transfer, edge support, and ease of movement on the mattress.
One of Dr. Rick's innovations includes the "spinal checker" app, a tool designed to assess spinal alignment based on a photo of an individual lying on a mattress. The spinal checker along with other technological advancements introduced by Dr Rick underscore Relief-Mart's commitment to marrying scientific research with practical solutions for better sleep and spinal health.

Introducing the Mattress Checker, an objective tool to assess your mattress's spinal support.
The Mattress Checker was developed in response to inquiries received over the years from individuals who wanted to assess if a mattress effectively supports their spine accurately. As side sleeping is the most common sleeping position, the Checker uses it to evaluate spinal alignment. As a normal spine should maintain “straightness” without lateral deviation, barring conditions like Scoliosis, the checker can be used as a tool to evaluate spinal alignment for all sleeping positions since the areas of weakness that lack support when side sleeping, generally correspond to those when sleeping on the back or stomach.
The Mattress Checker is an objective method to scientifically measure degrees of spinal deviations caused by inadequate mattress support. Its accuracy and precision are enhanced when users employ proper visual body landmarks to place “dots” along the spine, utilizing the two-finger zoom function for detailed dot placement, especially where the spine is visible.
Another notable feature of the app is its capability to identify stress points along the spine, evaluate how the body conforms to the mattress, and assess pillow effectiveness. For a comprehensive evaluation of all these aspects, users are encouraged to utilize Dr. Rick’s Free Consultation to get expert insights and solutions for better sleep by emailing your results to one of the mattress experts or their healthcare provider.
While other mattress assessment tools, such as pressure mapping, effectively measure pressure distribution, they may permit some loss of support to enhance comfort, albeit potentially leading to long-term consequences if support is significantly compromised over time. The Mattress Checker provides a comprehensive, objective measure to ensure proper weight distribution and support.
Using this patent-pending technology, you can simply capture a photo using your Android, iPhone, or Tablet, then place 5 dots along your spine from bottom to top, and let the app calculate your spinal alignment. Compare mattresses to ensure proper support and posture. Store and compare findings for smarter bed shopping.
Patent Pending Lumbar-Flex™ Zoned Lumbar Support
This technology strengthens and reinforces the horizontal midsection of your mattress to keep your lumbar supported and prevent sinking in. Mattresses that are unsupportive due to excess softness in the middle or cheap materials that mat down cause your hips to sink and put your spine out of alignment. With reinforced lumbar support, the Back Science™ mattresses promote proper spinal alignment by keeping your hips and lumbar supported to ensure your spine stays straight throughout the night. Everyone's body is different and you may need a different level of lumbar support than someone else, so we have made the lumbar support in the mattress easily adjustable by simply unzipping the mattress and Altering the lumbar support zone foam to achieve the right amount of lift for you.
