Winndom is a family-owned mattress manufacturer based in Hopewell, Virginia, known for crafting high-quality, made-to-order mattresses using American-sourced materials. Founded in 1988 by Winn Butterworth, the company built its reputation on comfort, craftsmanship, and customer service. Today, it is run by Butterworth’s daughter and son-in-law, Carman and Justin Faison, who have continued the founder’s legacy of quality and innovation, positioning the business for future growth.

Winndom’s mattresses were originally available only through a network of about 20 family-run retail stores across Virginia. In response to shifting consumer habits and the growth of e-commerce, the company launched a direct-to-consumer shopping platform, making its two most popular models—the plush Magnolia and the medium-firm Dogwood—available for online purchase and nationwide delivery. Each mattress is compressed and shipped within a week, offering convenience without compromising on comfort or quality.

Following a fire in March 2023 that destroyed its original facility, the company quickly resumed operations in a repurposed 8,000-square-foot schoolhouse, where its core team—many with over nine years of service—continue to handcraft 15 to 25 mattresses a day. With no assembly line, each mattress is built start to finish by experienced professionals who take pride in their work.

In addition to standard sizes, Winndom specializes in custom mattresses for boats, RVs, antique beds, and unique applications, having even made beds for movies and celebrities. The company also offers private-label manufacturing, which currently represents about 30% of its business, and is actively expanding into hospitality and specialty markets, including marine and athletic bedding.

While Carman was already immersed in the industry, Justin Faison, came to Winndom after a career in mining operations. Though new to the mattress industry, he’s taken an all-in approach—working on the factory floor, shadowing longtime staff, and personally meeting with retailers and customers to understand every aspect of the business. His commitment reflects the company’s deeply personal and responsive approach.
