Founded in the 1970s by Craig Miller Sr., the company originally specialized in waterbeds and later pioneered the development of adjustable air-supported mattresses. In the late 1980s, the company introduced the first computerized number bed. Under the leadership of Craig Miller Jr., the company expanded its expertise into the medical market in the 1990s, focusing on pressure relief mattresses for therapeutic use.

In 2007, after Nautilus exited the mattress market, Craig Miller Jr. acquired the Instant Comfort brand, inventory, and intellectual property from Nautilus. This acquisition marked a shift toward consumer-focused products, leading to the launch of the Personal Comfort brand in 2012. The medical line of business was sold in 2021, allowing the company to concentrate fully on consumer sleep solutions. Today, the business is family-operated by Craig Miller Jr. and his sons Jack and Collin Miller, with Scott Stenzel as co-founder of the Personal Comfort brand.
Personal Comfort mattresses are manufactured in the United States at FDA-registered facilities in Corona, California, and Riverside, Missouri. The brand offers fully customizable air-adjustable beds that allow each sleeper to control the firmness of their side of the mattress.
